I have gone out ice fishing when there was only a few inches
of ice hockey. What I would do is wear a pair of my own snow shoes, to
distribute my weight within a larger area, and wear a life jacket. I'd also
have a few large, sharpened spikes useful, if I had been to go through the ice
(I never did). The thinnest ice I was out on was approximately 1" thick.
It's a little creepy as it takes one or 2 pokes having an ice spud to
experience the ice, but I've always found that first ice is quite excellent
